GATHERING

1,Prelude “Spirit of the Living God”

Ringing of the Bell, Lighting of the Candles, Announcements

Call to Worship

Greeting (2 Thess. 3:18)

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.  And also with you.

Matt. 4:4

One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Call to Worship (responsive)

Let us come away for awhile and worship God our Creator.

Restore our souls and feel God's spirit of new life.

Startle us with the power of your Holy Spirit.

We give praise for God's goodness.

Prayer of the Day (all)

Almighty God, judge of us all, you have placed in our hands the wealth we call our own. Through your Spirit, give us wisdom, that our possessions may not be a curse, but a means of blessing in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.   Amen.

2.Opening Hymn 321 “Nearer My God to Thee”

Confession and Pardon

Call to Confession: Jer. 31:33-34

This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, says the Lord:

I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. I will forgive their evil deeds, and remember their sin no more. In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to almighty God.

Confession: Gracious God, our sins... (all)

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment.

Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

Declaration of Forgiveness

The Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.       And also with you.

3. Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE WORD

Prayer for illumination (volunteer)

God of mercy, you promised never to break your covenant with us. Amid all the changing words of our generation, speak your eternal Word that does not change. Then may we respond to your gracious promises with faithful and obedient lives; through our Lord Jesus Christ.   Amen.

First reading: Col. 3:1-11

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things--anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!

Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."

Sermon

4. Hymn 423 “Throw out the Lifeline”

Affirmation of Faith: Phil. 2:5-11(all)

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen.

Prayers of the People

Offering

Scriptural Sentences: 2 Cor. 9.7

Let us return to God the offerings of our life and the gifts of the earth.

Give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion,

for God loves a cheerful giver.

5. Offertory “Guess the Hymn”

6. Doxology

Concluding prayer (all)

Yours, O Lord, are grandeur and power, majesty, splendor, and glory.

All in the heavens and on the earth is yours, and of your own we give you.

Thanksgiving - (all)

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We praise you, great God, for you are ruler of the universe, and have sent your Son to be King of kings. We rejoice that he has triumphed over all the powers of this world, and governs the nations in justice and righteousness.

We celebrate his victory in his life, death, resurrection, and ascension to honor and might at your side. By your Spirit, claim our complete loyalty,

establish Christ's rule in every land and in every heart. Accept our homage as we offer our lives in the service of Christ's kingdom.

He is Lord forever and ever.   Amen.

Our Father, who art...

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
